Reveal of the Special Project

Bros and Riggs have decided the time has finally come to showcase a set of models that has been in the works for many years at this point. With its earliest mention being in March of 2018, the time has finally come to show bros' secret project. Without further adieu, we present the Big Boy and the Allegheny locomotives. Below are two sets of pictures, each labeled respectively and in order from oldest to newest.

Big Boy

Known throughout the art team as 'the special project', 'the secret project', 'project one', 'new boi' and a few other names, this is the model that originally started the 'secret project'. The model was originally going to be made in the classic art style but after some back and forth bros decided to move it to the modern art style. The first three pictures show the model at around this time. Not long after starting the model, FMT released and so we moved over, converting the boiler to cylinders in the process.

The model slowly started getting pieced together over time and eventually got to a point we'd call finished. However, it felt wrong and after a few weeks of deliberating, we came to the conclusion that it needed to be fully rebuilt to fix the issues(most notably, the boiler was too low. We described it as "everything was built around the boiler instead of under the boiler"). This brings us to the final image, the current state of the big boy.

With a complete rebuild, some other issues are getting fixed. This includes the angle of the front cab wall(previously it was flat), the lack of a frame(remember, the model started in 2018 which was before anyone besides MrRail had even attempted a frame), boiler size(was too big on the original), wheel spacing, rear truck, valve gear thickness(it looked like spaghetti noodles)... the list goes on further.

The rebuild, while needed, was also inspired by the recent completion of the second half of the secret project, the Allegheny.

Allegheny

The Allegheny, despite being relatively recent, was the first major collaboration between Riggs and bros. Starting in May of 2020, the next two years saw off and on work on the locomotive, but it slowly got to the point where we were extremely happy with it. Bros commonly refers to it as the best work he's done to date. The combination of both bros and Riggs' artistic stylings helped the Allegheny pop. The cab being done in the classic Riggs manor, the valve gear and small railings in bros'... everything came together to create what is shown below.

While we are airing out the secret project, we also want to note that this isn't all it includes, but rather what has been started. Within the guise of being a single project, we also plan multiple Challenger type locomotives, featuring late Union Pacific (3985), a Rio Grande L-3, and a Northern Pacific Z-6. Not only challengers, but a Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Yellowstone, a Chesapeake & Ohio H-6 (WM 1309), a Black Hills Central 2-6-6-2T, a Southern Pacific AC9, a Norfolk & Western Y3, a Norfolk & Western Y7, and last but not least Skookum.

That concludes the showcase. We thank you for reading and hope to have a bigger and better year in 2024! Happy holidays!
